Allergy-proof Your Home This Spring
Spring-related allergies are the most common type of allergy one can have. Widespread sneezing, coughing and drowsiness is likely to hit your home this season, but there are measures that can be taken to combat these irritants. We have compiled a list of measures you can take to decrease the amount of irritants in your home for a better seasonal experience. These tips can also work to fend off reactions to other allergens such as pet dander or dust mites.
Combat Pollen
Pollen is a major irritant during spring. While flowers are blooming and plants are coming to life, excess pollen can get into almost anything. You may notice that parking your car under trees during this time of year will result in a blanket of yellow covering most of your vehicle. This, in turn, leads to pollen getting inside of your car and ultimately inside of your home. Avoid the blanket of pollen by parking in your garage or a covered area away from trees.
A major way pollen is tracked into your home is through your shoes. Make sure to have welcome mats placed inside and outside your front and back doors to wipe off excess pollen and dirt. Pollen is also commonly tracked into the house from pets. You can cut down on the spread of pollen from your animals by brushing them down before they enter your home. You can also put up baby gates to keep your pet in a specific area of the home so that contaminants can stay contained.
Combat Mold
As the temperature starts to warm up for spring, combat mold before it gets the chance to create spores in your home by keeping your air conditioner on. The cooler your home is, the harder it is for mold to grow. In addition to this, it is good to invest in a dehumidifier that will decrease the amount of humidity within your home. There is also an option of buying a small unit if you would like to focus on just one room in particular. Keeping a small dehumidifier in your bedroom at night can help with nighttime allergy symptoms that make the morning time difficult to deal with. Mold thrives in damp spaces, so frequently cleaning your bathroom is essential. Bleach is great for killing bacteria and mold, just don’t forget to rinse after letting it do its work! Lastly, leave the door open after using the shower so that the room can air out and dry quickly.
Combat Dust
When you have dust allergies, cleaning can be dreadful. Protect yourself from irritants by wearing a dust mask when cleaning. Avoid using feather dusters or dry material that will cause dust to blow around only to settle again on the same surfaces as before. The best way to clean up dust is with a damp towel, as the dust will stick to the wet surface much easier. To prevent dust accumulation within your home, avoid clutter and pay attention to the nooks and crannies of your home such as under and between furniture. You can also prevent dust from settling in your home by rearranging items on shelves and surfaces frequently.
