Your Moving Checklist
Well, it’s July, which means it’s moving season again. Let’s face it—moving can be a pain. Our lives are already busy and the thought of uprooting them to move to a new place (no matter how nice it is) can be daunting. Thankfully, you don’t have to deal with it all at once. To help you enjoy your new home even more, we came up with a handy checklist for your next big move.
2 Months Before
Purge Every Room
Before you begin packing, go through each room and toss or donate anything your family never uses. Old clothes, toys, electronics—the list goes on. If it’s too good to toss, consider selling it online.
Organize Records
This is the perfect time to get your ducks in a row. Gather all your important documents and put them in organized binders. Also, if you have children, arrange for their school records to be transferred if need arises.
Research
Begin looking for moving companies and other essential moving services. Make sure to get your estimate in writing, so you don’t have any complications down the road. If you are moving to a different state, make sure the moving company provides a USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) number.
6 Weeks Before
Buy Moving Supplies
Boxes, tape, dollies—this is the perfect time to stock up on moving supplies.
Use Things Up
There may end up being several things that you didn’t throw out, but still don’t want to move such as perishable foods. Start using or consuming these items or consider donating them.
2 Weeks Before
Notify Work
This is a great time to remind your work that you’ll be moving soon. This also gives you time to mentally prepare for any work-related arrangements that need to be made.
Contact Moving Company
To be on the safe side, you should contact your moving company once again to ensure everything is on track.
Check on Your Car(s)
The last thing you need is a busted down vehicle on moving day, especially if you’re moving out of state. Make sure to have your car(s) tuned up and inspected before the big day.
1 Week Before
Keep Packing
Packing should almost be complete. It’s best if the family works together to properly pack everything for the move to come.
Refill Prescriptions
Before moving day, it is beneficial to refill all of your family’s prescriptions to ensure no one runs out of any essential medications while the move is taking place.
A Couple Days Before
Have a Payment Plan
Plan to have your payment ready for the movers. Coordinate with them on the best way to accomplish this. Whether they prefer cash, money order, credit, it’s best to have it ready on the day they come. Also, you should plan for the tip. Typically 10 to 15% of the total should be given. If the move was especially hard, consider tipping more.
Defrost Freezer
Make sure to empty, clean, and defrost your freezer at least 24 hours before your moving day.
The Day Of
Verify Movers
When the movers arrive, verify that their USDOT number matches the one that you were given. Moving is a tough job. Try to stay out of their way and provide an ample amount of refreshments.
Check Your Belongings
Once your boxes are moved into your new home, begin taking inventory of all your belongings.
