10 Day Nature Appreciation Challenge
Nature surrounds us everywhere we go, but how often do we really take time to appreciate it? As we rush through our fast-paced lives from one moment to the next, we may think we are too busy to stop and smell the roses. However, there are many ways we can take time to appreciate nature throughout our daily lives. Studies show that people who appreciate nature are happier, healthier, and more innovative. In celebration of Earth Day, we invite you to get some more nature in your life with our 10 day nature appreciation challenge so you can see the world in a new way each day.
Wake up with the sun
Start your newfound appreciation of nature off on the right foot by waking up to watch the sunrise. Yes, it comes early, but this beautiful moment makes the lost sleep worth it. Plus, taking a moment for yourself before the day gets started can do wonders for your well-being. Find a nice, quiet place to sit and relax as the breathtaking colors unfold before your eyes. Listen to the birds chirping and waking up with you. Simply take the time for peaceful reflection.
Walk or bike to work
Between traffic, bad drivers, and the fear of being late, commuting can be a major cause of stress. Alleviate the headache of rush hour every once in awhile by walking or biking to work. If this isn’t possible, consider getting an earlier start to your day and taking the scenic route to work. Or park at the far edge of the parking lot and take your time walking in. The point is to create more awareness of your surroundings and to appreciate the beauty around you, no matter where you are.
Explore your surroundings on your lunch break
Have you taken the time to really explore the area around you? Whether you work at home or in an office, you probably keep the same routine for your lunch break. Change it up this week. If you normally eat inside in the kitchen, try taking your lunch outdoors to enjoy the sun and the nice breeze. If your typical routine is to drive to get lunch, consider walking to a place nearby instead. Give yourself the awareness that comes from a new adventure.
Plant a vegetable garden
Planting a backyard vegetable garden is the perfect way to appreciate the wonders of nature. The key to success is to start small and not try to do too much at once. If you choose a sunny area that will give you lots of room, use quality seeds, and learn how to water properly, you will be off to an amazing start. Tomatoes and carrots are among the vegetables that are great for beginners.
Step up your recycling
There is no better way to honor Earth Day than to do things that are better for the planet. If you don’t already recycle, now is a great time to start. According to Recycle Across America, recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours. You can also make better choices when purchasing things at the store. Plastic can take up to 1,000 years to degrade in a landfill. Instead of buying plastic water bottles, consider getting a reusable one. They are convenient and stylish, and many will keep your water colder for much longer.
Learn about different birds and insects
When was the last time you studied the creatures that live on the earth with us? Maybe elementary school? You don’t have to be a student to learn something new. Taking time to distinguish between bird calls or understand how an insect contributes to the ecosystem reminds us how small we are in comparison to everything, as well as broadens our perspective.
Visit a local nature attraction
Wherever you live, there are bound to be plenty of outdoor areas you can go to get your fill of nature. Visit the zoo, botanical gardens, a local lake, or even just an area park. Make sure you allow enough time to take it all in.
Build a bird feeder with your kids
Invite nature to your door by building a homemade bird feeder. This instructional video gives you tips for how to build something using everyday items from around your house. Working on it with children will give you the added bonus of quality time and the sense of accomplishment that comes from making something. Hang it up and then enjoy the nature show!
Feel the rain on your face
Enjoying nature doesn’t have to be complicated. Doing something simple like enjoying the feeling of rain on your face keeps us grounded and helps us remember that there is beauty and wonder all around us. Let the rain drizzle on your face; stand and soak up the sun.
Go stargazing
It’s easy to forget sometimes that Earth is a tiny speck in the vastness of the universe. Stargazing allows us to both glimpse the beauty of the world and marvel at its immensity. Download a stargazing app to identify different stars and planets.
You don’t have to wait for Earth Day to appreciate the beauty of the world. Challenge yourself to enjoy nature each day!
